Day 1 - Arrival in Guatemala City and City Tour
Welcome to Guatemala City! We will head to important sites in the city, such as Avenida Las Americas, La Reforma, the Historic Center, Central Market, Santo Domingo Church, among others. We will finish our day by visiting Ciudad Cayala, famous for its beautiful architecture and commerce. Afterward, we'll transfer to La Antigua Guatemala.
Day 2 - La Antigua Guatemala
Today, we will take a stroll through the cobblestone streets of the colonial city, La Antigua Guatemala, with a local guide. We'll visit unique places such as the central plaza, La Merced Church, Arch Street, and San Francisco el Grande.
Later, we'll take you to a place in the mountains surrounding Antigua, Hobbitenango, just 20 minutes from downtown, where you can enjoy the sunset.
In the afternoon, we'll visit the villages around Antigua. These small towns are full of history, squares, breathtaking views of Antigua and the volcanoes, and places where traditional textiles, paintings, and more are crafted. We will visit San Juan del Obispo, famous for its artisanal chocolate and nispero products, San Pedro Las Huertas, a typical village of Antigua, and Ciudad Vieja, which has a colonial history with beautiful parks and churches. We'll end the day at the Macadamia Farm, where you'll learn about the production process, enjoy their products, and even receive a facial treatment. Afterward, we'll transfer you to your hotel.
Day 3 - Lake Atitlan
At 6:00 am, we'll depart from Antigua Guatemala in a private bus to the beautiful Lake Atitlan and its surrounding villages. Along the way (1 hour from Antigua), we'll stop for a delicious breakfast at one of the cabins in the charming town of Tecpan, nestled in the Guatemalan highlands.
Upon arrival at Lake Atitlan (Panajachel Village, around 10 am), we'll board a local boat to visit the villages around the lake. Santiago Atitlan is one of the largest municipalities in the area, known for its authenticity. We'll also visit San Juan La Laguna, a village with approximately 4,000 inhabitants, filled with color, murals, textiles, and beautiful views of the lake. This day, you'll learn about culture, textiles, and the history of these places. After the boat ride, we'll arrive in Panajachel, where you'll stay. Walking along Santander Street in the evening is a beautiful experience. Dining at Circus Bar (a family pizzeria with live music) is highly recommended.
Day 4 - Visit to Chichicastenango and Transfer to Antigua
After breakfast, we'll depart from Panajachel to visit Chichicastenango, which takes approximately 35 minutes.
Chichicastenango hosts the traditional market on Thursdays and Sundays, considered the largest of its kind in Central America. This market attracts not only local Quiche people but also foreign vendors and buyers, creating a vibrant mix of colors, dialects, and customs. They offer various hand-embroidered textile products woven by hand or on looms.
We'll also visit Cerro Pascual Abaj, located 20 minutes from Chichicastenango. This hill is considered sacred by the Quiche people, and at the top of the hill, ancestral customs are practiced before a stone idol known as Pascual Abaj. We'll explore Santo Tomas Church, an important and historic site in Chichicastenango. This is where the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Quiche people, was discovered. The church houses delicate pieces of imagery, and its interior blends ancestral and Catholic ceremonies. It features an 18-step staircase representing the months of the Mayan calendar. After the visit, we'll enjoy a delicious lunch at a typical restaurant in a colonial house with live music. Then, we'll head back to La Antigua Guatemala, which is approximately a 3-hour drive.
